I'm not saying that Mike Matheny is the best manager in the game and I disagree with some of his moves and decisions. We would all agree (including Matheny) that he still has room for improvement. With that being said, I find those who bash him laughable. You can bitch and moan all you want to, but deal with these facts:
1. As of June 26, his team has the best record in baseball. We can only judge him on the first 77 games thus far this season. Of course, that could change and the Cards have a rough stretch after the All-Star break.
2. Since the beginning of the 2012 season, only two National League teams have more regular-season victories than Matheny's Cardinals: the Reds and Braves. His team went further than both of those clubs in the post-season. When you consider that the Cardinals lost a Hall-of-Fame manager in La Russa (jerk), one of the greatest players of his generation in Pujols (phony) and one of the greatest pitching coaches of all time (Dave Duncan), Matheny gets major props for getting to the LCS.
3. Only four teams made the LCS last season: Cards, Giants, N.Y. Yankees and the Tigers. Considering all the injuries the team has suffered since the start of the 2012 season and all the youngsters who have had to fill in holes, Matheny has done a really good job in his first year and a half as the Cards’ manager.
You don't have to like those facts, but they are indisputable. The same fans who won't give him credit for winning are the first to rip him when they lose. You either don't understand it's all about winning or you're jealous because your wife or girlfriend thinks he's hot. Maybe both. Next time some illiterate Matheny hater starts getting stupid, just give him/her the facts or say one word: "SCOREBOARD." That should shut them up.
