On our Wednesday, May 29 show, Tony brought up his discovery of Smash in his days as an MTV video jock. It is something Twister didn’t know of prior to that moment.
Smash went on to recollect the invitation from MTV founder Bob Pittman inquiring as to Smash’s availability to join the original MTV Video Jock team. Due to his two-month-old contract with radio station DC-101 to be Howard Stern’s afternoon drive alter-ego, Smash turned down the initial opportunity while staying in touch over the time span.
In 1987, after leaving DC-101, Smash called MTV to give notice of his availability. He was hired and went on to do MTV Morning Drive and host “Headbanger’s Ball.”
After ok’ing his “Headbanger’s Ball” set tear down idea with MTV producers, Smash informed Axl and Slash from the band as to the stage destruction intent. They loved it and went on to dismantle the studio following the interview.
The 1987 Smash “Stage Destruction” interview with Guns & Roses has been designated by Rolling Stone Magazine to be No. 36 in the “Top 40 Greatest Moments in MTV History.”
